When to Fire Your Accountant: 3 Questions to Ask
Updated: Oct 9
Your accountant should make your life easier. Not harder.
Ask them these 3 questions. Their answers will tell you everything you need to know.
1. When was the last time you reconciled my accounts?
If they say "quarterly" or "once a year," that is a bad sign. Your accounts should be reconciled every month. If they can't tell you the last date, it is time to find someone new.
2. How fast do you respond when I reach out?
If you have to follow up two or three times before you get an answer, that is a problem. A good accountant reaches out to you first. They don't wait for you to chase them down.
One study found that 58% of clients leave their accountant because they wait too long for a callback. Most clients expect a response within 5 hours. Source: Accountants in Miami, citing research from Gustavo A. Viera, CPA
3. Can you explain what my numbers mean, or do you just send me a report?
A good accountant does more than hand you numbers. They explain what those numbers mean for your business. If all you get is a report with no explanation, you are not getting real value.
One industry report found that most clients leave not because of price, but because they don't understand the value they are getting for what they pay. Source: Accounting Today
If your accountant fails two or more of these questions, it might be time for a change.
You deserve an accountant who is clear, fast, and proactive. Not one you have to manage yourself.
